Not many people get to take selfies by hieroglyphs, ride a donkey and learn about life from the Bedouins on their birthday.
But, my sister Anna did. We celebrated her 23rd birthday in Petra.
We knew that after a full day of touring, we’d want to celebrate her birthday with a nice meal.
After a few Yelp and blog searches, I read that the luxurious Movenpick Petra Hotel had great food, a bar (sometimes rare in Jordan), and was a bit upscale to cater to Anna’s birthday festivities.
We arrived and were seated in an extravagant room. There was one family next to us, but other than that, we were alone. We felt like we were visiting a king’s mansion.
I started off by ordering the cheese plate. Our waiter brought it out immediately, which we were all shocked by. Or so we thought…
A few minutes later, the REAL cheese plate came out.
Needless to say, we had a lot of cheese to eat that night. And we weren’t complaining. Especially with the red wine we sampled throughout the meal.
Appetizers included the beetroot salad and seafood soup.
For a main course I went for the fish, caught fresh from the Red Sea that morning. I’d never had a fish rolled up like this before, and was surprised to see it displayed that way. It was tender and meaty, with a tomato sauce to balance it out. Fresh and flavorful.
The birthday girl had the salmon, and she told me the sauce gave it a lot of good flavor.
The others ordered the Rack of Lamb Provençal, which they both enjoyed.
For dessert we had the Muhallabiya amadrine (apricot cream with pistachio), and the Crepe Sicilienne with ice cream. Both were delicious – I loved the mix of Jordanian and European treats.
The Movenpick Petra is a great place to go for a nice meal after touring the sites. Lots of the restaurants in the area are smaller, more for kabobs and sandwiches – which are usually delicious. But sometimes, you want to treat yourself to something fancy.
Travelaine partnered with Movenpick Petra for this article. While this review was written independently, we were hosted by the company.
